Introduction
The global cotton industry encompasses over 100 million family farms across 75 countries, where cotton often forms part of complex integrated systems. In Benin, cotton is a primary economic sector, generating 40% of foreign exchange and 13% of GDP, providing over 40% of rural employment and sustaining half the population. Currently, cotton picking in Benin relies heavily on inefficient handpicking or costly mechanization, both detrimental to users. HarvestHand, a portable handheld cotton picker designed for Benin’s cotton industry, aims to boost efficiency, enhance user comfort, and reduce environmental impact, aligning with China’s Belt and Road Initiative to improve livelihoods and labor conditions in the developing world. The cotton picker comprises six essential parts: motor, picking head, transmission system, battery pack, control switch, and safety guard, minimizing weight by eliminating superfluous structures. Upon activation, cotton is effortlessly drawn into the collection bag by the picking hooks as the spindle rotates rapidly. Once full, the bag unzips at the bottom for easy cotton transfer to designated storage. The handheld unit connects to the collection bag via a quick-release latch for swift installation or removal. Powered by rechargeable 18650 lithium batteries, it ensures rapid charging and multiple reuse cycles. In terms of aesthetics, the product integrates the natural form of cotton into its rounded shape, with soft lines that mimic the lightness of cotton fluff, paying homage to the land and its abundant cotton crop. The product's form, comprised of gentle curves, enhances its lightweight appearance. The enlarged opening under the cotton picker guides users to place the cotton in the correct position, reducing the learning curve for use. The acrylic protective cover over the pivot point blends smoothly with the overall design. Its larger curvature and added protrusion make it more user-friendly. The handle's arc echoes the exterior curves, maintaining the product's coherence. Color choices are inspired by Benin's rural natural environment and cultural context. Green symbolizes nature and prosperity, aligning with the country's flag colors; dark green resonates with common local flora like palm and coconut trees; white, often found in West African ethnic attire, reflects local life and minimizes heat absorption, mitigating product overheating. In terms of cultural value, we integrate Beninese cultural elements and symbols into the design, manifesting regional character and cultural significance through the logo and product form. While maintaining a contemporary aesthetic, we also draw inspiration from traditional motifs and craftsmanship, ensuring the product is modern yet steeped in tradition. This product takes into account the safety hazards that exist during the storage and transportation process, and has designed a protective cover that is easy to install and remove for the product; in terms of ease of use, the product is lightweight and portable, and it also features a waist belt for convenient user carrying and a battery pack that is easy to replace.
